Servants of Chaos – Spotlight: ARKONA

Active since 1993, Poland's ARKONA stand among the pioneers of second wave Black Metal, releasing seven powerful albums and numerous smaller releases to-date. Landmark works such as "Imperium" (1996) and "Zeta Reticuli" (2001) have taken on classic status, and recent releases like "Lunaris" (2016) and "Age Of Capricorn" (2019) showed the band has more than kept up with the pack, with main composer Khorzon retaining a fierce dedication to creating epic Black Metal.

This autumn, ARKONA will unveil their eighth full-length, "Stella Pandora", further cementing their status as one of Black Metal's finest. The new album captures the Polish pioneers at their most intensely focused and melodically triumphant.

At Servants of Chaos festival, ARKONA will deliver a special performance featuring "Stella Pandora" in its entirety alongside selected songs from their rich discography. We spoke with band-leader Khorzon about their upcoming set at DMP's inaugural festival.

Q: Hey Khorzon! You will present your forthcoming album in full at Servants of Chaos festival this October. How are you preparing for this special performance?

First of all, we are very happy to play at this festival with such a great line-up of bands. And you are right: we will play our upcoming album in its entirety! We are very happy about that. It was Phil's idea to which we agreed right away. This will be our first concert where we will present all the new songs. As we are performing this new material regularly in our rehearsals, it will be no problem to bring these compositions on stage.

Q: Aside from the new album, you will also play select songs from your discography. Could you give the audience a little insight into which older songs you will play?

It will be only two songs because we must fit them in the time frame of our entire performance. We will probably play songs from the "Lunaris" album which are usually very well received at concerts, i.e. 'Ziemia' and the title track.

Q: You have played a lot of gigs throughout your career, and of course, in Germany. What are your memories of the German audience? How do you like performing in Germany? Is there something special about this country?

We have indeed played a lot of concerts in Germany. We have always had a very good reception and German concerts are always well organized. Besides, it will be nice to play in the Resonanzwerk club again, because we have quite fond memories of our last performance there!

Q: Last year you celebrated 30 years of ARKONA, a fantastic achievement. Please tell us: what keeps your fire burning these days to continue creating Black Metal Art and performing it onstage?

I have always been a part of the Black Metal scene. I love listening to this music and I love playing it. I can't imagine not doing it. The years go by, and the fire is still burning!

Q: Last question: which other performances at Servants of Chaos festival are you most looking forward to witnessing?

I am really looking forward to AKHLYS, as I truly like their music. But, of course, I'd love to see other bands if possible.
