Artists
Born 2014 in Brittany, France as the solo project of Marion L. (ex-OVERMARS), MÜTTERLEIN has consistently blurred and transcended the boundaries of Doom, Noise, Industrial, and Black Metal. After making a striking 2016 debut with "Orphans Of The Black Sun", in 2021 Marion released her magnum opus "Bring Down The Flags" - a uniquely powerful expression of dissent and resistance. Listen to the album below:
Since "Bring Down The Flags", MÜTTERLEIN has performed solo and in collaboration with artists including THROANE and TREHA SEKTORI. Marion's menacing artistry has proven even more intense and immersive when translated to the stage. Watch an excerpt from a recent MÜTTERLEIN show below:
At Servants of Chaos Festival 2024, MÜTTERLEIN will premiere an exclusive set including tracks from her forthcoming, yet-to-be-announced third album. We spoke with Marion about her experiences playing live and what the audience can expect from the upcoming performance.
Q: Good day Marion and thanks for your time! Your recent gig at Walpurgisnacht in Germany was sadly cancelled. How often have you performed with MÜTTERLEIN in Germany and what are your recollections?
Unfortunately, I have never performed a concert in Germany with MÜTTERLEIN. With my previous band, OVERMARS, we went there very often, and it remains my best tour memories. The venues and the audience are perfect for the music I love. MÜTTERLEIN is the perfect project to return there with, I'm sure. The people are open-minded and very knowledgeable in the dark Arts!
Q: After the release of "Bring Down The Flags", you played a lot of solo-shows with MÜTTERLEIN, but also a few collaborative gigs with TREHA SEKTORI, for example. What are you personally fonder of, intimate and intense solo gigs or more collaborative efforts?
My solo concerts are necessarily more intense for me because I invest a lot of personal elements into them, and they represent quite a challenge for me. But when I perform with TREHA SEKTORI, who is one of my favourite human beings and musicians, there is this dimension of sharing that makes me truly happy. I enjoy doing both, and I need both. It's a balance between destructiveness and creativity, in both settings, but in different ways.
Q: To add to that question: was it always clear to you that you would perform MÜTTERLEIN's recent music solo on stage? Or were there plans to involve live members?
Yes, it has become very clear to me over time that MÜTTERLEIN needed to be represented solo on stage. I want to get as close as possible, in every context, to the authenticity of this project, especially the solitude that is inherent to it. It can be quite limiting sometimes, but it also forces me to inhabit everything intensely.
Q: You will play a brand-new live set based on your forthcoming album at Servants of Chaos festival. Can you tell us about this upcoming setlist and maybe something about your new album too?
I always have difficulty describing my music. But with this forthcoming album, I wanted to explore electronics further to create an even more immersive dimension for my concerts. In the slowness and heaviness of electronic basses, there is something very physical that happens live. At Servants of Chaos festival, I will perform a 45-minute set all in one go with these new sounds. I must apologize in advance to those who will be present for the low frequencies and the darkness of the concert venue.
Q: Last question: Which other performances are you looking forward to witnessing at Servants of Chaos festival?
It's very hard to say because I love them all and I would hate to miss a single minute of any of the announced bands. But I would be particularly sad to miss THROANE and ULCERATE. The lineup for this festival is amazing.
MÜTTERLEIN will perform on October 18th at Servants of Chaos festival. Additionally, on October 19th, Marion will join Dehn Sora (THROANE, TREHA SEKTORI) as EITRIN to present songs from their 2023 self-titled debut live for the first time.
